My arm hurts. I don't know why, but I guess it was because it was in only one position yesterday. Now it hurts like hell and it hurt so much I couldn't even sleep it off last night. Dammit.

I lost my internet connection yesterday, so I did nothing but make Mutant X screencaps all day long. I capped all the characters, including Brennan, so turps33, you might like this. ;)

Also had a talk with Dark Mirage and Falconia regarding the PureMX site, which still hasn't been up even now. I'm starting to get restless, I've got loads of ideas, but without the site, it will all seem like a huge waste of time. *sigh*

Oh, and that lawsuit Tribune had against Marvel? Might be the cause for Mutant X's season three to be the last. *sob*

Still waiting for Daniel Jackson on my mailbox *curses the Philippine post office* and for the microphone Dark Mirage sent me. I really want to watch season 3 already! *sob*

Watched a bevy of Syd/Vaughn vids that I downloaded from Visual47. Good God. The cheese, the cheese! But man, I loved it. I'm a sucker for het as long as it's based on friendship (Sam/Daniel, Jesse/Shalimar), or is already an established couple (Syd/Vaughn). So castalie, you're not alone in the Slashers Who Like Het Wall of Shame. ;)

Note to self: Do that sg1flashfic assignment already. Must write today. Stop coming up with plot ideas and scenery descriptions while doing something else, like in the middle of Homily during Church, or while shampooing.

Because everyone is doing it. *g*

1. Who is your favorite animated character? Why?

Oh my goodness. Saitou Hajime from the anime Rurouni Kenshin. A man who follows his own moral code and doesn't legitimize his actions or the decisions he makes. He also has this really cool sword stance that really makes me go *GAH* What's it's name again? Oh yeah. Gatotsu. Whoo!

2. Who is your favorite television character? Why?

I change favorite television characters from time to time, but Daniel Jackson was the only television character so far that was able to really move me, who challenges my beliefs system to the core and motivated me to look at my passions in life with wonder once again. Seriously. I encountered Daniel Jackson when I was a bit jaded by life. I stopped reading. I couldn't write a new poem. It took me forever to finish reading the new Christina Rossetti poetry collection that I bought. And right after I watched Torment of Tantalus, I was so bowled over by the insights that I learned, by the wonder in Daniel's eyes at something that seemed so unreal.

I ran to my poetry books and read poetry over and over and over again.

Instant defamiliarization. All by just one character on a television show. Who would have thought it was possible??

3. Who is your favorite (no longer in production) televison character? Why?

Hmm.....Irina Derevko from Alias. This woman's decisions, every move she makes are full of so many layers. And the way she plays the so-called master of game theory Jack Bristow like a fiddle!

4. Who is your favorite television ensemble cast? Why? (If you don't have
one/want to imagine the possibilities, assemble one and explain your choices
and the fandoms they are from).

The Stargate SG-1 cast. I didn't believe in the word "ensemble cast" until I watched this show. Alias also have a good ensemble cast, but I really can't bring myself to like Vaughn.

5. Who is your favorite movie character? Why?

Mario from Il Postino. I'd like to think that the power to weave words is within all of us, we just have to open ourselves to it. Mario is so ecstatic about poetry, so eager to learn, without frills. I was as happy as he when he built his own metaphor. *sigh*

Now the question is, which course to take??

I won't deny that I want to teach, which is why I'm slightly partial to the English language and Lit teaching option. But I don't want the focus to be all about teaching-I also want to brush up on my Lit and hone my skills as a reader. I'm still confused on which to take, and I'm slightly worried that I have to go back to DLSU and get 3 recommendation forms. I doubt that my Lit professors think highly of me. *sigh*

In other news, I finally got my assignment for sg1flashfic. I'm quite pleased with what I got, and would consider writing all three. Hey, I need to brush up on my writing. I have an excuse. ;)

Hey whaddya know. I'm reccing a fic. It's not exactly new, it's in fact over a year old. I recently found out that one of my dear friends from the Mutant X fandom writes gorgeous Sam/Daniel fic, so I researched her at FF.net and discovered this absolutely beautiful Jack fic. It's called Killing Time, and it can be found here.

As usual, Rachel writes like a dream, and she weaves a theme about Jack and his life as a soldier so masterfully, I was in serious ache when I finished reading it. It's not slash, it's more gen but she manages to contrast Jack and Daniel with so much sensitivity on Jack's part.

Again, the fic ain't new, so you all might have read it already. But anyway...just want to share, just in case. :)

One thing I'll be missing from my university after I graduate: the Free Internet. Well, its not exactly free, but its a whole lot more reliable than my cable internet that my mother pays a lot of pesos for. Seriously. The darned thing is slower than my mom when I try to pop a green joke!

Its graduation practice today, and I was supposed to be at school by 8:30 in the morning to pick up my toga. As usual, I overslept and barely made it. I grabbed the first piece of clothing I could find, bugged my mom to write up a check for my photographic coverage (damn school wouldn't let your own parents take pictures of you?! What the hell is that all about??!), amd then bugged my brother to drive me to the FX stop. When I got to school? I learned some interesting things.

1. I only need to pay 250 pesos for the darned photo coverage. The check was needless. I could have paid using cold cash. Instead, I looked like a cheap idiot who can't squeeze out a measly 250 bucks and had to depend on Mommy dearest to write a check for me.

2. By the way, to you Americans reading this, 250 pesos is about 5 US dollars. Do the math.

3. The photographic coverage includes one class picture that had to be taken TODAY. The dress code? Your toga, cap, gown and semi-formal attire. With the very first clothes I grabbed this morning being a pair of old jeans, a semi-decent shirt and rubber shoes, I was obviously under-dressed for the occasion.

4. The good thing was that almost everything, except for graduation practice that was from 6:30 in the evening to friggin 8:30, was optional.

5. Graduation practice, at that goddamned timeframe, is, for the record, optional. But the tickets for the graduation itself, letter to the parents and other necessary stuff, will be distributed afterward.

6. Goddamit to hell.

So I went home, changed clothes, scrounged up enough money to get to school for the actual graduation practice so I can get my damned letter and tickets already. Yet here I am, taking a break, writing an entry instead of going to the photo coverage. Heeheehee.

Finally re-downloaded AIM. God, that was difficult. Hmph.

Anyway, had a really funny talk with my brother last night. My sis and I were watching Thor's Hammer (yes, its Stargate again), and then my brother suddenly showed up and started drooling over Sam. The conversation:

(Umm, warning for slight sam/jack jesting from my brother)

Brother (in a huge, whiny, disappointed voice): Why, why, why did they turn her into the ugly old hag she is now? That (points at s1 Sam) was so much better!
Sis (in a bored voice): Ah, you know. They have to make her look young to make her appealing to the audience, I guess.
Brother: That shipper bullshit again?
Sis: Yeah.
Brother: Hah! Check out the girl in John Travolta's latest movie. If anything, that's how a military haircut should look like.
Me: What?
Brother (guffawing): BALD!
Me: That would be so bad! You can't possibly bestow such a fate on Sam and Jack like that!
Brother (guffawing loudly now): That should be something for them shippers, two eggshells fucking like bunnies!

*collapses into giggles*

As I've been totally converted into the Sam/Daniel ship after my first viewing of Serpent's Lair, I found the need to make a vid. Well, to pester my sister into making one, at least.
Parents, Music Vids, and more

Item 1: Parents

My parents are off for a trip without even a goodbye. Wow, my mom was pissed at me more than I thought.

Item 2: Top Ten Things I Hate About Music Videos

And I do mean the fan-made music videos type. Clearly subjective and quite obviously a rant, so watch out!

10. Bad song choices. Yes, I know this is subjective, but still. So many hard-worked videos fail because of bad song choices. In my humble opinion, pop/bubblegum/mush songs belong in humor videos, not actual videos that try to depict a serious message regarding its subject matter. For example, Britney Spears' song "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know" can be considered romantic but can you actually see it being used in a Brennan/Emma video without thinking about Britney the whole time? Take note: choose your song carefully, because some people judge a video from the song choice itself. For example, I will never download a video using the song of a boyband (other than Boyzone or maybe Boyz II Men), no matter how great the vid maker's previous work is. Its nothing personal, its just that I can never take a boyband's songs seriously. And I'm sure I'm not alone.

From experience, its always good to pick songs that:

-hasn't overused its airtime in radio stations
-hasn't been used before in the same fandom, or at least, hasn't been used more than once
-has lots of variation in tempo and intensity, especially in dramatic videos
-has lyrics that relate to the subject matter. Not necessarily literally, even lyrics that relate to the subject matter in its abstract essence is enough.

9. Vid makers taking their chosen song's lyrics too literally. I was watching this Stargate SG-1 vid once. Its a Jack/Daniel romantic vid. The lyrics goes: "So you call me on the phone", and the corresponding clip shows General Hammond, talking on the phone.

What's wrong with this picture?

General Hammond has NOTHING to do with Jack/Daniel romance. The scene of him talking on a phone certainly has nothing to do with Jack/Daniel romance either. Why was it there? Because the lyrics pertain to someone talking on a phone.

In poetry and prose, there is such a thing as organic unity. In an art object, there is such a thing as color combination. Surely the same thing pertains to music videos.

There is nothing wrong with illustrating a song's lyrics through your choice of clips, but do not compromise the overall subject matter and coherency of the overall video for the sake of doing so. The lyrics don't need to be illustrated in its literal context. Focus on the stronger messages and make use of subtlety and vagueness. In any case, it is always better to suggest than spell things out.

8. Over use of transitions. Most vid makers use programs like Windows Movie Maker and Pinnacle Studio that have ready-made transitions for vid makers to toy and experiment with. However, fundamentally, less is always more. Transitions like hearts, circles, stars, and pinwheels are better used in humorous videos, while dramatic vids prefer quiet transitions like the classic black and fades. Scatter these transitions evenly throughout your video. Ideally, it is better to start and end with a black fade, nothing more, nothing less.

7. Vid makers' inability to match clips to the beat of the music. IMHO, the strongest, most important areas of a song is the beginning, the first chorus, the coda, and the ending. These areas vary in tempo and intensity, and the clips have to coincide with these ups and downs. You can't have the same clip going on and on from the chorus to the coda, or else you lose the strength and drama that the coda provides.

6. Using clips that are too long. This is a music video, people. The clips have to coincide with the music. Unless you're using a song that barely has changes in tempo (e.g. really slow songs), you have to trim your clips to time with the changes of the beats, and these changes are fleeting, so the clips have to be fleeting, too. Ideally, a clip shouldn't be more than 2 seconds. If you really need to show the whole clip, try cutting them up and fading them with each other; or parallel it with other scenes.

5. Using the same clip again in the same vid. And more than once. Do not do this unless you have a very good reason to. For example, in my Brennan spoof, I reused the clips of Brennan topless and showing off with his powers in Hard Time, and Jesse saluting Brennan. I was making a point, and I reused it for good reason. If you really need to show a clip again, do this only if you really have a good reason to, or at least, try to use video effects to make it look different from the previous same clip.

4. Vid makers not having a gameplan from the very beginning. I'm sorry, but I believe this is a necessity. The choice of clips, the order and structure wherein they appear in the video have to be pre-planned and not haphazardly put. Parallels have to be REAL parallels; if you intend for your video to tell a story, it has to tell it coherently and completely. If your video has a theme, stick with the theme and reinforce it as much as you can.

3. Bad choice of clips. I hate looking at videos that use the same clips all over again, or at least, use scenes that are the least memorable of the series in their videos. Choose your clips well. Pick the ones that are the most dramatic, most important, most memorable.

2. Vids using clips of people talking. What the HELL is up with THAT?? I really, really, really, HATE seeing a video that is full of clips of characters with their lips moving. This is a music video. I know, maybe its a special scene between the two characters, maybe that's where they both declared their love for each other, WHATEVER. If I can't hear what they're saying, there's no point in putting a scene of them talking.

Most characters have this special thing called "silent moments". Scenes of the character looking contemplatively at someone or something could mean a lot if put into music. If you really have to put dialogue in, put it at the beginning, then fade into the music, or vice versa.

1. Vids of god-awful quality. IMHO, if a vid is blurry, no one is going to watch it. A person could only look at a squinty moving image and guess whose face they're looking at for how long. I understand that vid makers want to save webspace, but what's the point of showing your audience a video that they'd have to had a headache to see clearly? Try to save your videos in 150-340 kb. Its just 2 or so extra mb anyway, and all the hard work you've gone through in making your video look nice would be rewarded when people can see it clearly.

Music Vid Recs

Because it cannot be said enough, Joanna's Sark Videos are just a dream to watch. She is, in my humble opinion, the best vidder I have ever encountered. She obviously spends more than a day in making her videos, and it shows in the results. She's careful in song choices, meticulous in editing and choosing of clips, and absolutely right on the money with timing. My favorites:

Weapon by Matthew Good Band
-This is my favorite among Joanna's list of Sark videos. Fantastic choice of music, amazing editing (loved the part wherein she interspersed 4 different scenes of Sark shooting a gun at someone to the beat of the drums in the song's bridge) and choice of scenes. This vid turned my brother into a Sark fan (although he refuses to admit it). Hehehe. Download it, I'm sure you'll all like it too.

Join Me by Him
-A video that experiments with parralels when it comes to choosing scenes, and succeeding well. Lovely music, and the scenes are edited and meshed together so well, my jaw just drops in awe whenever I watch this.

Take note that you don't need to be a fan of the Alias TV show to love her videos, because her videos are just out of this world. ;)

Item 3: Michael Shanks in Andromeda

Specifically, "Day of Judgement, Day of Wrath". The download of the ep isn't finished yet, but I have rewound that part wherein Remiel picked up Harper by the neck and told him "Bad move, Mr. Harper!", about....10 times? And that doesn't even count the times I rewound it yesterday....

Seriously. Not since the sight of Jesse in a trench coat have I been reduced into a giggly teenager in my puddle of drool. The worse part is, my brother witnessed me in the middle of drooling and won't stop calling me out on "drooling over MS rotating naked"! Ugh.

Letter from Karyn Sullivan

I was checking my e-mail today, and just for the sake of it, checked the inbox for reflect@villanelle.net, which is the e-mail address for Reflections.

Turned out there was an e-mail from Karyn Sullivan, one of the Producer's Assistant of Mutant X Productions. Apparently, our gift to Forbes March (a scrapbook of fanart, birthday cards, fanfiction and posts from the Pure Board re:Jesse) is being withheld at the Mutant X Productions, and hasn't been given to Forbes March yet. The reason? They don't allow "unsolicited scripts" or "story ideas", and it is their "industry policy".

I have nothing against Karyn, in fact, we were all aware that this might happen. But we thought of circumventing this policy by letting Mr. March know first and foremost that he doesn't have to read them. We just wanted him to know that we appreciate his character, Jesse and work in portraying Jesse enough to be inspired to express ourselves creatively. Unfortunately, I guess things didn't really go as planned.

What made me even more upset was that the letter was dated July 9, 2003. If I didn't feel like checking the Reflections inbox, I would have never found out that Forbes never received the scrapbook. And here we were, wondering why we still have yet to find out if Forbes received the scrapbook or not. *sigh*

I am upset, definitely. With myself, and with the circumstances preventing us fans from fully letting Forbes March know how much we appreciate Jesse, and his portrayal of him. We wanted Forbes to receive the birthday gift, so just in case he gets the feeling that his character ain't worth two cents, he'd change his mind and realize that in fact, a small contingent of Mutant X fans actually care. I'm frustrated. I wished I have acted sooner. :(

Some good Stargate Fanart

Umm...yeah. Third entry for the day.

I spend a lot of time wading through the Creative forums, and found some really good Stargate SG-1 fanart. I want to make good fanart too, dammit. *pout*

Sam/Daniel
I'm not really shipping them, but I get this really giddy feeling whenever I see these two together working on something. Kind of like how I feel whenever I see Shalimar and Jesse together. Giddy. Really giddy.

http://tere-art.com/creative/viewtopic.php?t=2812
http://tere-art.com/creative/viewtopic.php?t=912

I especially liked the 'Scientific Minds' one. *blush*

Jack/Daniel
My favorite relationship on television, next to Shalimar and Jesse, of course. I just love the portrayal of a healthy, platonic, man-to-man relationship on TV. *sigh* Take note that some of these are slash.

http://tere-art.com/creative/viewtopic.php?t=1503

Neige from Lerefuge.ca makes the best Jack/Daniel fanart, IMHO. I haven't ventured enough into the fandom to find any better.

Daniel
Ahh. Because this won't be my journal if he won't be here. ;)

http://tere-art.com/creative/viewtopic.php?t=671
http://tere-art.com/creative/viewtopic.php?t=102

Dammit. Why aren't there much fanartists this good in the MX universe? Ally and Iris are the only ones I can remember. *sob*
